Professional Scrum Product Owner

Course Overview

There are many myths and misconceptions about the role of the Product  Owner. The accountabilities of the Product Owner, however, go well  beyond managing the Product Backlog and writing User Stories. The  Product Owner is pivotal to bridging business strategy and product  execution in order to help the organization create valuable products.

In  this two day class* students will develop and solidify their knowledge  of the Scrum framework and the accountabilities of being a Product Owner  through instruction and team-based exercises. Students learn techniques  that they can use to help them overcome the challenges that are often  encountered on a day-to-day basis. They will do this while learning  better ways to collaborate and engage with the users and customers, stakeholders, their team(s) and organization to provide greater value in the product being delivered.

Course Learning Outcomes

When a student leaves the classroom they will have improved skills to impact their products and organizations by: 

  • Improving value created by staying focused on value and outcomes
  • Increasing organizational learning validating sooner rather than later which will also reduce costs
  • Achieving  better business outcomes by aligning initiatives with business strategy  through shared vision and aligning people toward clear goals
  • Increasing business agility by being data informed and empirical

Course Learning Objectives

  • Understand that Product Ownership includes Product Management performed with an Agile mindset
  • Recognize the value of a product over project mindset
  • Learn how to bridge business strategy to product development tactics
  • Experience ways to align the team around the business strategy, product vision, Product Goal and Sprint Goal
  • Find ways to effectively communicate the business strategy, product vision and Product Goal
  • Discover techniques to collaborate with users, customers, stakeholders and members of the Scrum Team
  • Identify metrics that can be used to track value creation and successful product delivery
  • Learn how quality and the Definition of Done support long term product viability and reduce time to market
  • Understand the Scrum Principles and Empiricism
  • Understand the Product Owner accountability on the Scrum Team
  • Learn techniques for Product Backlog Management, Release Management and Forecasting

Who Should Attend this class?

This course is appropriate for students in any industry where teams  are working to solve complex problems. The Professional Scrum Product  Owner course is for:

  • Product Managers wanting to up-skill their agile proficiency
  • Professionals interested in advancing their Product Ownership skills 
  • Product  Owners with some experience in the role that are looking to improve  their understanding or improve their use of Scrum and the Product Owner  accountability
  • Scrum Masters wishing to improve how they can coach Product Owners

Professional Scrum Certification

All participants completing the Professional Scrum Product Owner  course receive a password to take the Professional Scrum Product Owner I  (PSPO I) assessment. The industry-recognized PSPO I certification  requires a minimum passing score of 85%. Class participants of official  Scrum.org classes who attempt the PSPO I assessment within 14 days of  receiving their free password and do not score at least 85% will be  granted a second attempt at no additional cost.

Students of  official Scrum.org Professional Scrum Product Owner classes are also  entitled to a 40% discount on the PSPO II assessment once passing PSPO  I.

PMI PDU Credits

Students of Scrum.org courses are able to claim Project Management  Institute (PMI) PDU credit: 14 PDUs after attending a two-day   Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO) course. Please note that PMI  PDUs are earned for course attendance and not for passing a Scrum.org  assessment. Students can claim PDUs under PMI's "Education courses  provided by other third party providers” category. You can claim your  PDUs online at https://ccrs.pmi.org.
